Coup D’état is pleased to present Paula Schubatis “Emotional Baggage: The Things We Carry” in partnership with I.M. Weiss Gallery, opening at Coup D’état on Saturday, September 13th, 2025 from 5 pm – 7 pm.
How accessible/inaccessible do we want to make the past? How do we compress objects from our memory? Who are we when the world is not watching? What is the world when we are not watching it? These are queries Detroit-based painter, textile artist + designer Paula Schubatis examines in this immersive new exhibition.
Paula’s practice is driven by her passion for the performative + ceremonial aspect of design + art making as well as the ritual of utilizing functional objects in everyday life. Her work takes on beautiful, painterly, ethereal forms but is often a good-natured poke at traditional notions of style/taste, form + function.
Paula’s design work is featured in her eponymous paulaschubatis line which consists of wearable garments + lifestyle objects, the two of which often intersect – function in the paulaschubatis stratosphere takes on a serious, but actively evolving role as the wearer/user invent new ways to engage with an object based on its tactility + form.
