An ambitious adaptive reuse project transforming a vacant 25,000 square foot building at 1533 Cadillac into a vibrant hub for arts, culture, and community activity.
Located at the corner of Cadillac and St. Paul, the design of the CAC is being led by Detroit-based architectural firm M1DTW, in collaboration with Castor Design, and will soon welcome a dynamic mix of nonprofit organizations, artist studios, and creative spaces.
Surrounding the building, the grounds will be transformed into publicly accessible courtyards and greenspaces designed by OSD, the multidisciplinary landscape and design firm behind projects such as the Shepherd and Stanton Yards.
The CAC will house arts organizations such as InsideOut Literary Arts, Black Art Library, and a neighborhood-run ceramics studio, along with community organization the Villages CDC. An outdoor courtyard along St. Paul will provide pedestrian access to Bowerbird Home, concept store + gallery Take Me Home, and neighborhood bookstore In Thicket. Similarly, the building will include more than 15 artist studios and creative workspaces.
The move represents a significant new chapter for InsideOut Literary Arts, which has been rooted in Detroit’s Midtown for nearly three decades. The organization, which empowers students through creative writing, poetry, and performance, sees the relocation as an opportunity to deepen its community ties and creative impact.
“InsideOut Literary Arts is known across the City as a catalyst for creativity and an amplifier of youth voice through the power of the written and spoken word,” says Suma Karaman Rosen, Executive Director of InsideOut. “This move affirms our commitment to Detroit’s arts and culture landscape, and our role as a champion for authentic expression. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, the timing couldn’t be better — we’re very excited about this new home for our next chapter.”
With its mix of cultural programming, artist studios, and public spaces, the Cadillac Arts Centre will serve as a vital new anchor for the greater East Village neighborhood — a place where creativity, community, and collaboration meet. The CAC is anticipated to open in early 2026.
